    Welcome to Year 1!

We are looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

    Here is some important information:

    • Bring your book bag every day.

    Our PE days are :

    • Daffodils Tuesday / Wednesday
    • Snowdrops Wednesday / Thursday
    • Bluebells Monday / Tuesday
    • ( PE Kits can stay at school and will be sent home each half term to be washed ).

    Suggestions for clothing

    • In wet weather you will need a coat.
    • In winter you will need warm clothes for playtimes.

    Key Information

Please remember a school lunch is available to all children in KS1 free of charge.

Please inform the Reception Desk if you intend to use this regularly or occasionally (to give an idea of numbers throughout the school).

Children do not have milk in Year One but they do still have fruit provided every day at morning playtimes.

    Homework in Year One

Spellings – Children will bring home a selection of key words they have been looking at in their phonics lessons each week, using sounds and spelling patterns learned. Please help your child to practice sounding out and spelling these words (or learning the letters needed if the words are ‘tricky’ and don’t follow a pattern e.g. the, no, they, to, etc). The children can then practise applying these sounds by forming simple sentences as part of the homework.

Reading – Children will have either one or two reading books that will be changed each week. Please support your child with reading at home as regularly as possible and write your initials by the date (under the ‘home’ column) to show your child has read to you. Staff will do the same in the ‘school’ column. If you want to speak to your child’s teacher, please tick the yellow column. If the NB column has been ticked then your child has been given a new book.
(If you ever have any concerns with your child’s reading or require any advice, please let your child’s class teacher know).

English/Maths – This homework will be linked to the learning they have done in class that week and will be sent home on a Friday, due back the following Thursday.

Parent Reading Morning - Every Thursday

We would love to welcome parents and carers each Thursday morning (9.00am-9.25am) to come into the classroom and listen to the children read and help children in the class with reading activities.

If you are available, please leave children with the teacher in the playground as normal, so we can register the children first, then come to the back door of the classroom, tick next to your child’s name on the class list (for health and safety purposes so we know who is in the building) and come and join us in class.

(Any children’s buggies can be left under our shelter during this time).

    Any Questions?

Please remember to speak to your child’s class teacher or classroom assistant with any questions, concerns or comments.

At the end of the day, the most overwhelming key to the child's success is the positive involvement of parents.

At Cherry Lane we understand that learning is a partnership between home and school.  During the year we are likely to run a number of parent workshops to assist you in helping your child at home.  Look out for these opportunities.

I have enjoyed the parent workshops as they have made me feel more confident with helping my child at home.

Purple Mash is an exciting and safe online environment where children can get involved in all sorts of creative projects to support their learning in Literacy, Maths, Science, Computing, History, Geography, RE, Art, Music, and Design and Technology.

Your child has a Username and Password to access their Purple Mash account from home.

This personal login is unique to them and will enable them to access the different activities Purple Mash has to offer and to complete any homework that has been set by the class teacher.  Please click on the image below to access the materials.
